HICKORY FLAT – West Union staged a major second half comeback and won their opening round game in the Division 2-1A Tournament against Blue Mountain 60-52. The Eagles got 16 points from Andrew Childers to help rally the Eagles from a five point deficit at the half.
The fourth quarter saw seven lead changes and West Union took the lead for good at 53-52 with about three minutes remaining.
Childers, Dillon Clayton and Adam Grubbs scored critical points, most of them coming from the free throw line for the Eagles in the closing minute to seal the win.
Hayden Basil and Bobby High provided the offense during the first half as they combined for 15 of the Eagles 23 points.
Basil led the Eagles with his 20 points. Childers had 18 and High finished with 11 points.
West Union advances to face the number one seed, Ashland on Thursday night at 7:45.

HICKORY FLAT – West Union bunched all their runs into two innings to down Hickory Flat 9-1 in their Division 2-1A game on Thursday.
Chase Coffey had a big day at the plate, driving in three runs with a double and single plus adding a run scored of her own.
After Hickory Flat took an early 1-0 lead, the Lady Eagles got the offense rolling in the third. Jesslyn Brewer drove in the first run with her RBI single. Follow an out, Gracen Conlee came through with another RBI single to put the Lady Eagles in the lead.
Ashley Hatton recorded the third RBI single of the inning as she drove in Brewer. Coffey followed with a two-RBI single that plated Conlee and Hatton. Coffey took third as Hickory Flat attempted to throw Hatton out at the plate and came home as the catcher threw the ball into the outfield attempting to get her at third. West Union went up 6-1 following Coffey’s run.
The Lady Eagles threatened in the fourth, but left Eden Conlee and Brewer standed following their two-out singles.
West Union got on the scoreboard again in the fifth as Conlee and Hatton singled, Coffey drove in Conlee with her RBI double. Mattie Pilcher’s single scored Hatton and Coffey was called out on a close play at the plate when it appeared there was never a tag applied.
Maegan Whittington drove in Pilcher with her single to extend the lead to 9-1.
Kylie Massengill was the winning pitcher for the Lady Eagles.
West Union is now 4-3 in division play.
